The grey 3.5 inch mattresses that come on an 895 aren't really suitable for sleeping more than 1 night. So I replaced them with a 10" foam mattress. Just wanted to pass along a how-to on how you can affordably and easily upgrade your v-berth mattress on your 895.
Steps:
- Purchased a 10 inch Lucid medium semi plush King-sized mattress on Amazon (around $300).
- Purchased an electric knife (aka electric turkey knife) on Amazon for about $15.
- Removed the two mattress covers that came on the Lucid mattress to reveal the 10' foam.
- Removed the two factory mattress pads that came from the Jeanneau factory in the v-berth. Used those two pads as a template for marking then cutting the foam mattress to shape with the electric knife (note on shape: there is a non removable 3.5 inch rim at the foot of the bed which I cut a notch in the mattress to accommodate. Specifically, I cut in 3.5 inches horizontally from the foot of the mattress, and 3.5 inches up vertically from the bottom of the mattress to remove a rim of foam in the size and shape of the non-removable 3.5 inch rim. That non-removable rim serves to hold the mattress in place so its actually convenient that it doesn't come out).
- Now that the mattress is cut, put the two Lucid covers back on the new mattress.
- Install on boat.
Notes:
- For under $350 we got a custom fitting mattress that is significantly more comfortable than the factory v-berth even after I’d added a pillow topper to it.
- I saved the two factory mattress pads that came with the boat, just in case we sell in the future and the buyer wants them.
- You'll want to use an electric knife. It's well worth the $15. Makes the cuts straight fast and easy. Using a razor knife is really difficult and non-professional looking by comparison.
- This whole project takes about 2 hours. (30 minutes - opening mattress and laying everything out, 30 minutes - marking the foam using the existing mattress inserts as a template, 30 minutes - cutting along marked lines with electric knife, 30 minutes - installing)
- There is no mess, cutting the mattress doesn't kick up a big cloud of foam or anything.

If there are any questions on how to accomplish this, don't hesitate to ask.
(related note: I've seen some of you folks out on the water with some interesting customizations, I'd be interested to see other people do how-to's as well).
