Hi everyone, i would like to purchase a new anchor for my 30i.
Wondering if there are any 30i or similar owners that can help out and tell me what would be a good size anchor that wouldn't be too heavy for this boat.
Thanks,Guy

Hi Guysela,
We have an excel extreme, the one without the bow, with about 10 m of chain then 50 metres of rope. The size is simply the one recommended for our boat.
It it does not seem too heavy, but I think if a longer chain was needed, that would make a big difference.
However, we don’t have difficult anchoring conditions, we usually tie up to a jetty, but even if anchoring, the bottom is soft mud, and the water not deep, and we have plenty of sheltered spots for any wind direction. So apart from feeling that what I have is not too heavy, I can’t claim to have ever given it a really serious test, the benefit of being a lake/estuary sailor.

Recommended size will vary depending on the anchor you choose - the manufacturer should be able to advise (if not then avoid!). It may be that not all anchors will fit your current bow roller arrangement without fouling the hull - I swapped the near-useless CQR copy on our SO32 for a Rocna 15 and had to modify the roller to keep the anchor away from the bow (see thread here: jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/7363/sun-odyssey-32-rocna-15).

hmmmmmm, shall we say it depends! on many factors.
If an aluminum version of a steel anchor, it will be probably 1/3 the weight.
Depending upon the ground you are anchoring, will also decide what works, or does not work. Not a fan of danforth anchors myself. But if I was in silt or clay, ie fine soil mud, great option. Big flkes for the weight, so a better setup and lower weight anchor needed.
If you have gravel or weed bedding, a different style anchor is needed too. One of the claw, spade or equal is better than a danforth.
A danforth does not always reset if the tide changes 180. The other styles do better at this. Hence why I do not like danforth styles, along with usually a bit harder to set vs other styles and brands.
Wind speeds you will be in. a 1/4 lb of steel iron anchor per foot, will net you about a max 20 knots of wind, then the anchor will be overpowered due to lack of surface area in most cases. 1/2 lb will net you to about 40 knots, 1lb around 60 knots.
Then you have all vs part chain and rope.....even a short chunk of cable between the anchor and chain to help the anchor set deeper than chain to the anchor......
Anchoring seems a bit like politics, no one real way to look at things.
With that said, my equal to an SO28, ie an 85 Arcadia, I use a 7.5KG/16.5 lb bruce, it has held up into the mid 30 knot relm when I want a big real anchor. A 10KG would be better IMHO. For days when racing, I have a 9 lb fast set, with 2M of chain, and 200' of 1/2" line.

I suppose it depends of anchor type its the chain that really adds the weight but would be wary of sacrificing chain for rope as I don't know if the 30i has the same shape keel as my 33i which has a fin on the back which sticks out , I initially had a chain rope mix and the rope managed to wrap around the keel. This is a nightmare to clear so I have enough chain for my day to day anchoring 30m and 50m of rope for emergency.

Hi,
I also own a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 30i and was just facing a similar issue I live near the Baltic Sea where my boat is located and love anchoring. But I only anchor over night if there are less than 5 Windforces and not having a leeward coast.
Until now I was going with a 750Watt Windlass, 30m chain in 6mm (due to the weight not 8mm) + 30m rope in 12mm with a 10kg CobraII anchor. I never had problems so far with this setup.
Because I was looking for a new project and feeling more safe on anchor, I now started to upgrade my anchor setup.
Actually I bought a Rocna 15kg anchor. According to Rocna a 10kg anchor would have been sufficiant. I am planning to change the chain to 8mm in a lenght of 40m + 40m rope. Anf of course the windlass needs a change to support 8mm chain + 14mm rope.
How ever I am now facing the problem that my bowsprit roller has just one roll and no swinging element. So the windlass can not get in the anchor itself anymore and needs a helping hand.
I do not want to replace the whole bowsprit roller, if possible. Does anyone knows if there something I could buy and add to the existing setup to have a swing?
Cheers Torsten
