Hi guys I recently bought a 2015 merry Fisher 855 in excellent condition and has been kept in a marina always out if the water , I plan to keep it in the water and wanted to have it bottom painted to prevent problems, the dealer said it was 50 dls per feet but now is telling me that I should do an epoxy coat barrier and bottom paint which brings it to 100 dls per feet, I don’t mind doing it but is it really necessary? Is that a reasonable price? I live in Florida .Some people say no, some say yes ,I want to do what is best but not sure as I am a first time boat owner and don’t want to be taken advantage off. Any advice is welcomed
thanks

Hi doc and welcome to the forum! First things first. If boat was kept out of the water all the time there is a chance epoxy barrier and antifouling was never applied. In that case you should do so if you want her to keep in the water. Secondly I suggest you talk to the previous owner and simply ask how was the boat treated. If that isn’t possible you should do what’s said previously. There are some good signs if boat was treated properly: - “Gel coat” (underwater part) is not the same color as rest of the boat - bottom seems to be a bit uneven, maybe a bit rough.
Those signs are not(not even close) conclusive but good start. If you happened to find out service history of your boat you can save some bucks. In any case you should apply exactly the same antifouling (or at least compatible one from the same manufacturer). If you use something different you need new primer which could very well be epoxy primer. So you are starting from the top.
I can not comment on costs in Florida since I’m from EU.
Hope that helps. Best of luck and congratulations on your new boat!

Any advice is welcomed thanks Hi Doc, what they are telling you sounds about right. I had my 795 bottom painted last year and it was a three step process; sand the gel coat, apply the epoxy primer, and apply the bottom paint. Mine cost $2,153 for all the work, so it came out around $93 a foot not including tax. Labor was $1,440 and material was $713. They used Sea Hawk products and it turned out great and holding up well. Hope this helps. Ron
