Hi, I am wondering if anyone has had the same experience as I have with the Solimar rack and pinion steering. There is an excessive (I think) amount of 'play' in the wheel. I have to turn the wheel 15-20 degrees in order to affect the direction of the rudder. I took the binnacle apart and did not notice excessive wear on the gears. In fact they looked very pristine and there were no obvious metal shavings or deposits inside. I replaced all of the bearings and when I put it together again I have the same experience. What am I missing? Thank you in advance for any help

Hello tgoldsbury,
Firstly welcome to the forum. I have not had experience with this issue but perhaps inspecting the rudder quadrant while someone rocks the helm back and forth would show where the play is in the system. In our yacht the steering is controlled by cables and if they were not tensioned correctly I could imagine this problem occurring.
Regards,
Trevor
