Hi there.
I am currently interested in buying a 2005 SO 35 but there is a squeaking noise from what sounds like the bottom bearing of the rudder post and the steering is a slightly stiff to turn. Can the bearing be lubricated and if so what sort of lubricant should I use? Do you think there could be something more sinister and expensive going on?
Any information will be very gratefully received.
Regards.
Willie. D.

Hi Willie and welcome to the forum. The SO35 is a great boat. I strongly recommend getting a professional survey done if you are serious about the boat. The pulleys at the bottom of the steering pedestal that direct the cables to the rudder quadrant can squeak. As far as I know the rudder bearings are water lubricated. These can be checked for movement and wear when the boat is on the hard. Hope this helps Rob

Search this forum, there are several threads on this. It can be the cable sheaves or the bearings. Lubrication solves the problem.

Hi Folks.
I see the last time I logged in was 24th.March 2019. Since then I have had Myna Bird, Sun Odyssey 35, 2006. surveyed and repaired before finally buying. I am currently carrying out some recommendations that the surveyor requested and one of these is to replace the out of date flexible gas hose in the gas locker. In particular I cannot find a gas union to fit between the end of the hose and the fitting in the wall of the gas locker. Any ideas on how to overcome this would be welcome.
Thanks for the replies to my earlier queries about the steering which have all been sorted. Also, the amount of information on the Jeanneau owners forum is amazing. A great site.
Many thanks.
Myna Bird.

Hi mynabird,
what was the reason for the squeaking noise and how did you solve the Problem. I also have a SO35 since this year and hear the same sound.

Hi all
I also have a SO35 and after coming across the bay of biscay, I noticed this problem,
The bearings at the bottom of the steering where they turn to go onto the quadrant squeeking,
I removed the wheels and pub on some lubrications. I only had winch grease onbaord so had to use that, it did stop the issue,
Every now and again I get slight squeaks but it seems to go again,
Will monitor and redo again with different grease if it comes back up,
I also noticed that the pins that hold the wheels that the cables for rlsj. Had some wear on them,
So might look at replacing that also
