New exhaust advice

Hey all learned friends.
I have a petrol diving compressor on board. I have the fresh air hose on a 3m lead which I hoist into the heavens when I run it to ensure clean air.
But the device itself sits in a deep port locker, and the exhaust fumes cause fun. I put a 2m 'exhaust' metal pipe onto it but it heats up something wicked. I currently just feed this out the back of the boat when running it.
So, I want to put a proper exhaust system in. I know I want to buy a flap which seals (dry exhaust, not wet) and open it when in use. I also want to fix the exhaust to something in the locker but it does get very very hot. What do I use to lag it? I also want to be able to disconnect the exhaust from the compressor (currently welded) so need to think about a connection of some description.
Exhausts I know very little about - and searching for things you know little about (including the names of the wrap??) makes life hard.
(Current thoughts of an idiot are)
1) Small exhaust from muffler (not silencer) protruds about 1 inch. Welded to pipe at the moment. Cut and attach 'something' so that I can undo it when required.
2) Thing that attaches to above is lagged with (??) and I fix it to the hull stringers leading to back of boat.
3) Pipe then goes into SS lockable exhaust thingy.
Do I need to worry about water getting in? Would kill the compressor I think?
Can I add a silencer - appear to be two thoughts around the effectiveness of such a thing - plain yes and no!
Any and all advice please!
Thanks.
Mike
