I have been considering fitting gas struts to assist with the outside lockers. We don't have to go into them for anything when underway on a regular basis. Having the lid stay up safely - rather than holding the lid and trying to attach a restraining cord at the same time makes sense. www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts/stainless make a good range. It's to fit a SO42i. It takes 5Kg lift to raise the lids. I just need to do some careful measurement and pick the right end fittings. Has anybody else done this? thanks, Graeme

Hello Graeme,
I haven't done it but have thought a better system is required so would be keen to hear how you get on. I think it is a very good idea.
Regards,
Trevor

Funny you should ask, I was discussing this with a guy at the yacht club where I have my boat.
The guy in question has a newer Jeanneau and has done that, not only to the cockpit lockers but all throughout the boat where there is a flat surface that opens upwards, including the floor boards, I’ll see if I can’t get him to sign up here and share his work with the rest of you.

OK,
Time for some measurements and probably some trigonometry (since the mounting point cannot be where you lift with your hands) I'll report back

Graeme, this guy does this for a living, and he owns a 42 that’s fairly new so he has all the info regarding mounting points as well as pressure needed for the springs.. I’ve send him a text so hopefully he will be here shortly
