I found this site which has interesting ideas about reducing the cost of travelling through France on autoroutes. I'm going to give it a try in September. about-france.com/index.htmIan

Generaly I find french motorways expensive only in the sections : Calais-Paris, Barcelona-Perpignan, Cote d’Azure - but still good value for money - avoiding Paris is good idea - country road are amazing - just you need to have time ...

French motorways can be very expensive, but they are generally safer than the Nationals which now have had the average speed limit reduced from 90 to 80 kilometers per hour.
My personal view is that the French are some of the worst drivers in Europe, they generally drive too fast for the conditions and too close, however, to be fair this is starting to change due to the speed cameras that are starting to appear everywhere. They also suffer from being unable to read the road ahead, hence the death rate on the normal road network is almost three times that of the U.K.
I drive thousands of miles on French roads every year and have been doing so for the last twenty five years, my advice to the driver who only uses continental roads once or twice per year is keep to the motorways as much as possible, keep to the speed limit and stay out of the outside lane as much as possible and keep your distance. For the extra money involved it is worth it.
