Looking for recommendations on adding diesel genset our SO 439. Make, size, quietness, ease of install, problems, etc.

We have 2008 Mastervolt Whisper 3.5 which I believe is now discontinued. We also have two 135W solar panels and a AirBreeze Wind Generator. Quite frankly, we rarely use the genset except to heat hot water. If you can add solar and a wind generator, they are best and very quiet. The small generators are noisy, but livable. Ours was mounted at commissioning in the aft lazzerette without having to cut any holes.

We have a Next-Gen 5.5kW unit installed in our SO439. We have the 2 cabin version and the gen set is mounted in the large port aft storage locker (where the 3rd cabin would have been). It would be kind of noisey for anyone sleeping in the aft cabin but not unbearable. Some sound insulation in the storage locker would help. It has plenty of power, can easily start and run the 3 A/C units on the boat. I will say that we don’t currently use it much but plan will probably use it more as we move onboard. Nextgen 5.5

Thanks, I was looking looking at the NextGen 5.5 vs 3.5 kw models. We have the 3 cabin layout. The port aft lazerette has a plywood platform in it that I assume is for a genset mount. Is that where yours is mounted?

Ours is located In a storage space that would have been the 3rd cabin if it was a 3 cabin layout. It is where the mattress would go in a 3 cabin layout, as close to the centerline as possible and aft. It basically sits above the aft part of the fuel tank. The unit was lowered through the port lazerette. A dedicated battery and charger were also installed near the genset.
If you have the 3 cabin layout and wish to have it in the port lazerette, you may want to consider the 3.5 to minimize weight and size as that would be further outboard and higher than our location.
