Hi Spritz
We use a self inflating model that can be worn comfortably all of the time and has a crotch strap so it will not ride up while in the water. Ours is auto inflating when it hits the water. Some models have a pull string to inflate. We prefer the self inflating type but this is a topic of debate that has pros and cons and most people have a very definite view.
Ours are Bourke Brand and made in Australia.
Regards,
Trevor

Spritz, I started off with a Gill suit but wasn't all that keen on the hood in bad weather I feel it's too small. A friend had an XM offshore suit which was really good on our passage from Plymouth to Troon. We had F8 in the Irish Sea and he was fine. The Gill just didn't feel right. www.mailspeedmarine.com/xm-yachting-offshore-jacket.html. I bought the XM Offshore suit and am really pleased with it. I've been on deck with full water over the bow and apart from the water down my neck the rest of me was dry. The suit is about 5 years old and still in good nick. The trouser are a little long but I've been to lazy to get them shortened. If you go for the suit and need different sized trousers to jacket just ask the supplier. They can usually mix and match. I've been using a Musto BR2 for about three years with maybe 100 days of wear on it and it's still in good shape. I'm really happy with it. I wouldn't take it around Cape Horn which is ok because the higher end models are really heavy and a lot more expensive. And I have no plans to go around Cape Horn anyway .

There are a number of good quality brands out there - I happen to wear Gul - and each make has a slightly different cut, especially the jackets. We all have slightly different body shapes. Beyond weatherproof, you should be looking for unrestricted freedom of movement through the full range of arm, head, leg movement. This means trying on the outfits before you buy but it is worth the hassle to have full on deck mobility.

Hi Sptriz, Haha....Sorry about my reply as I wrongly assumed you were talking about life jackets!! We use Musto HPX jackets and Musto MPX ( cheaper) wet pants with bib and braces. They did have the rubber seals around the wrists deteriorate and needed to be replaced. We like the Musto but they are not cheap and when they wear out we may go to something a little less expensive.
