I have an issue with the throttle on my Jeanneau So36i (2010).
When going in to reverse, the throttle worked/gear and clutch engaged no problem. When going in to forward, it worked intermittently. Seemingly it worked when we first started the engine and I guess it was cold? But most time, the gear would not engage until the revs were quite high, which wasn’t good as there would be a big clunk when it finally did engage.
Naturally it's a dangerous issue.
Any suggestions or have other people experienced this and solved it?

Maybe one end or other of the Bowden/Teleflex cable has loosened. There are clamps that hold the outer cable firm. Can you get someone to shift the lever (whilst engine in NOT running) and you inspect where it comes to the gearbox. If that end looks OK you will need to look at the rear of the lever itself which I think (not familiar with the 36i) needs the housing opened.

Are you sure this is a cable issue? This sounds like it could be a problem in the transmission itself. If the shifter moves then the cable is moving. There's no slack or stretch in it to go "clunk". As Malcolm says, if you watch the transmission when the shifter is moved into reverse you should be able to see whether the problem is with the cable.
You can get a good look at the transmission if you go through the rear-access panel in the aft quarterberth (assuming you have the 2 cabin model).
The heating thing is interesting. What fluid are you using in there?

I posted about this 6 mths ago and was told my findings were part of a recall in 2010. Well I bought the boat new in 2010 and had the failure reported here in 2017. I never rec'ed a recall notice. The cotter pin that holds the shifter cable in place behind the shifter was missing. The cable fell off and the boat would not shift, was stuck in reverse at high revs. I luckily shut it down in time to prevent ramming the dock. If it happened 30 seconds earlier I would have been under a low bridge. Enjoy putting the cotter pin back in. You have to get in the stern port side locker with a needle nose plyer to put the pin in. I had to use a mirror to see. Taking the whole throttle/shifter off the boat might have been easier. I'm glad you or the boat were not injured. This has been the only problem that I have had with the boat. Great boat.

Thanks for these replies. The shipwright says it was the throttle cable (thankfully not the transmission) and is replacing it.
Thanks for the suggestion about the cotter pin which I passed on to the shipwright.
I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Hello All,
I love my Jeanneau 36i performance, 2010 for both cruising and occasionally racing. In the thread, I see others have had issue, similar to mine. Is this the same gear shift model as you mention? I would like comments please on the Seastar FX Throttle gear shift. This has been replaced about two years ago, and now is going wrong again. Problem: first the gear shift cannot hold its revs in either idle or gear. A rag placed between the handle & wall can sort that. However, later on, shifting the gears cannot - just freeze in neutral. Forward nor reverse work. In idle, can still rev up and move handle to fwd and reverse. As this is the second time with this product, same problems, I feel I cannot depend on it any longer. The first time this froze was coming into a fuel dock with a superyacht in front. Regardless of the slow speed we were moving, people suffered rope burns trying to avoid collisions! I keep an Allen key close by and vice grips, with the throttle cover removed. This is NOT the solution. Cables have been checked and seem alright.The mount for this unit is low port side, on cockpit wall. I am considering a dual system now, and moving it to the binnacle column if possible. As I am a bit novice on the repairs, your comments are most welcomed. Thank you in advance.
