The name Peter Lewis sounded familiar and after a quick google found that he used to own the SO37 Lulu Belle, which he has very keenly raced in Sydney.

Sorry, but I'm really disapointed from the design - after 28 years more experience this boat suffers huge design flows compared to my very old crab pod just to mention few:
- dimentions - new 9.97x3.44 - old 9.98x3.5 - old one is actually bigger - heads: new one only one small not convenient head - old one two ensuite heads - galley : new one - very unconvenient ( obstructing passage to rear cabin) no space for storage, only one sync - old one - amazing - galley, enougmouse fridge and enourmouse storage space - living are: new one kind of small and not homey - old one very nice curves huge table easy accomodating 8 people in comfort. - bed size: new one kind of a 10% smaller then the old one - cockpit: new one is A LOT more spacy - old one: small and 5 people are max - water : new one - 206L - old one 186L + 115L ~300L - nearly 50% more! - engine : new one 21HP , old one 28HP - both rubbish 3cyl crap

Andrieu has always drawn some fast boats not least the current Sun Fasts.

Andrieu has always drawn some fast boats not least the current Sun Fasts. That's a good way to describe Vasko's opinion... Size wise, if the 349 is too small then get a 379 I hate the way cars get bigger and bigger over generations moving up the next size class. Look at at the VW Golf... If boats went like cars, the 379 would be descended from the SL34. I'm glad that the designer probably got to dictate the design of the 349 rather than the marketing department who were probably responsible for the Golf's size increase. 2 heads in a SL34 that's just a crazy waste of space. When I compared the SO37 & SO40 when I was looking, the SO40 looked like it is an extended 37 with the extra room giving space for a 2nd head. I would not want to see a 2nd head crammed into a 37 and quite frankly i'd have been happy with a single head 40, except there is a big void rather than lots of storage in SO40s without the 2nd head

I'm definatly off the mainstream shoppers e.g. I love my Citroen XM - the last one produced with RHD and will all posible extras but 18 years old - most people hate big citroens and go for german build things same with winter places - most people go in franch alps for winter holidays I love bavarian alps and ski resorts there loking this way I'm more and more thinking about ordering a new cutom boat - same as my SL34 just scalled to 40 or 45feets... looking at this company - www.customyachtworks.com/new-custom-yachts.php

I think it is pretty obvious the two designs are aimed at two very different types of sailor.
Back in the 90's 34ft would have been considered a large cruiser. By todays standards it is what most would consider a starter boat size. Even our 43ft seems to be dwarfed more often than not by the new generation of boats.
Best of all design advancements have meant that these new 40-50ft boats can still be handled safely by a husband and wife team, something that many smaller older designs cannot.
In short, I personally don't think Jeanneau really consider something as small as a 34 footer will attract people that look to go on extended cruising anymore and, rightly or wrongly, have redesigned their boat to appeal to weekend racers who like to go cruising from time to time. As they are still in business and many boat building yards are not you have to assume they are judging their customer needs accurately.
A custom build, one off, scaled up version of the SL34???
At what price £400,000??? If you are spending that kind of money would you really put it into an old boat design that has very, very limited appeal to anyone else when you come to sell it on.

fun is priceless I do not think that a custom design boat can actually keep price at all to be honest ... e.g if someone decide to go custom I will assume the amount spent need to be considered gone forewer for fun...
