Hi there, I have a 1999 Sun Odyssey 45.2 with a deck stepped mast.
Recently we noticed fresh water (rain) entering the cabin and we found it coming in from the vicinity of under the mast.
I've since been told that the mast has compressed and sunken the deck, therefore cracking and allowing water to enter. apparently the section between the decking under the mast and the stainless steel pole from the keel supporting the mast weight had a timber spacer section which has rotted away, allowing the deck to compress.
Does anyone have any insights into this problem, and any links or resources to help me deal with it.
I have been told I will need to have the mast and standing rigging removed, the fibreglass deck around the mast cut away to re-pad the support underneath and then re-glass the deck and re-install the mast and rigging.
I'm wondering if there's a way to access from internally to replace the rotten supports, anything to avoid cutting away and the extensive work quoted.
Any help or insights appreciated.

Barry Sorry to learn of your problem, this has been reported on quite a few models of around that date of manufacture. There is a fuller thread on this at: jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/1635/compression-post-sunk-keelOn the positive side it is mainly labour costs, so if you are reasonably competent and have time you can do quite a lot of work yourself. You should also significantly benefit form much better sailing performance afterwards as you will be able to get the mast standing rigging correctly tensioned and avoid the inevitable sag you must have been suffering. Please take photos and keep the board informed on how your repairs progress Malcolm

i had the same problem on mine two years ago. the cause was the through deck connectors installed on the front side of the mast step. the repair was easy. To avoid having to repair the gelcoat I removed the mast step. cut away the deck glass 1/2" inside of the outer profile of the mast step. removed the old rotten wood . installed new high density hard wood in two pcs with an epoxy high strength mixture of filler. ensured the old holes where the wires came through was well filled. glassed in three layers of biaxial. faired again with high strength on top to ensure a flat mast base and all good.
or you can just pay the boat yard $1000.

I also had same problem with front thru-hull connectors. Mine was simple to resolve with hair dryer in ceiling area near compression point and then sealant on deck at fitting where water was entering and trailing down the wire. I do not recall what sealant ai used, but it might have been silicon? This was two years ago and no problem since. I keep boat in Pacific NW where we have heavy rain and heavy seas going north each spring to Alaska. It may not be as bad as you think. Good luck!
