Today I received a letter from Jeanneau about a recall of the steering gear on my SO39i.
".... we have recently detected some problems regarding the steering system of the SO42DS and SO39i, which may cause steering failure.............."
"The study of this disorder with our supplier, Lewmar, has resulted in the recommendation to replace all the potentially defective parts."
Does anyone have any further details on exactly what the problem/issue is?

I have contact into our dealer and will post. I have a 42DS. Although the letter does not state that every 42DS and 39i has the problem if anyone did not get a letter contact your dealer immediately. I have been instructed not to use the boat until repairs are made, that repairs are necessary (not just inspection), and to provide them the location of the boat (they want to do the repairs without the boat being moved?). According to dealer, the problem does not relate to all 42DS.

Does anyone have any further details on exactly what the problem/issue is? I am reliably advised that the recall is for SO39i & 42DS boats built before August 2006. It would appear that after several months sailing, the bearings that are attached to the composite base behind the steering wheels may become unstuck, possibly causing difficulties steering. Jeanneau/Lewmar are supplying a kit to fix this issue to all the dealers involved & the job should take no more than a couple of hours to do. It does not affect the rudder bearings at all, only the bearing that the steering wheel shaft is is supported by. Owners should have received a letter advising of the recall if their boat may be affected, but if you have not and remain concerned you should contact your dealer Malcolm

The email I received from the dealer today. I received an update from Jeanneau yesterday. The problem lies with a shaft bearing in the steering system. Jeanneau has supplied us with instructions for the repair, and is sending repair kits, which will be here tomorrow. I can have a technician on board Monday, 12/18 to do the work (all of our techs are booked out until then). Jeanneau does reports that the problem could cause a loss of steering, which could pose a serious risk to your safety, and that of others. Based on their report, I would not recommend using your boat until we can perform the necessary repair. Steve
