Hi everyone! I own a sunrise 35 with lifting wing, it appears never to have been fitted with a locking pin but as it is very heavy might never have had one (could someone advise if this is normal not to have locking pin or some form of device)
Also when we are sailing in heavy weather the keel actually jars going over heavy swell, from guessing I would suggest that it is lifting with the yacht and then falls back down on to its stops making a clonk. I would suggest that this is mot healthy for the keel box -- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Nick

Hi, I sailed in the past 2 boats (First 305, Sun Odyssey 35) with lifting keels. When the system becomes older the sword gets more space around the axes. When I was sealing on seas with high waves then it was sometimes like we ware in a big bell, klong – bong ….I found out that the sword was banging to the sides of the keelbox (not up – down) when the boat sways over the waves. The problem was biggest when I run before the wind, but then I put the center keel high and the bangs where gone. There is no problem with boats stability to sail with the lifting keel high. I only lowered the keel when sailing at the wind (high), motoring was also better with the keel high, speed was better and there was no noise. Maybe you can try it out on your boat.

Marc, Thanks for the mail and I must agree with what you are saying it appears that I have movement in the pivot part of the keel.
I am removing the wing keel later this year and replacing pivots and lifting cable. I will also be changing the keel bolts at the same time.
Thanks for all your advice
Nick
