On my Arcadia which I have just bought I am getting more than normal amount of water under the engine mount when motoring but not while stationary. It appears the water may be coming from the stuffing box/shaft seal which may not have been re-set correctly after the engine Volvo 2002 was re-installed. I can not find picture or instructions info on the correct settings. Any advice on this?

Wallace
The Volvo shaft seals do need replacing every 5 years or so. Do you know when the seal was last replaced?
The seals must be bled of air every time the boat is taken out of the water and relaunched. To remove the excess air the seal can be "burped" by squeezing the sides
If the seal is in good condition the main problems are likely be down to poor engine alignment, which can only be determined by uncoupling the shaft from the gearbox and using feeler gauges to accurately measure any horizontal or vertical displacement. If you are not familiar with this a good marine engineer is needed. to correct the alignment the engine bearers will need to be adjusted.
If this is not the problem the only other thing to check is the P bracket and cutless bearing which must be robust and not allow any movement of the shaft in any dimension (other than rotational)
Hope this helps

I think I have the how to set up teh stuffing box with a stock Yanmar setup, ie what is in my Arcadia, as I have all the OM's etc. If that can work, post here, PM or email me and I can maybe scan what I have and send it to you. Unless your in the Puget sound region of the world, then we could possibly meet.

Not to say that Wallace's problem is the stuffing box, BUT, I have recently had more than my share of water in the bilge area with the stuffing box. My problem it turns out, is the Velco IIRC brand water muffler. This unit has a manual drain on the aft side of the motor, which is now leaking. I all of a sudden was getting more water than I knew what to do with in this area. along with sponging it out after use, then coming back to AMoretto after 24-48 hrs, and finding close to half gallon/2 Liters of water in the bilge.
Posting this problem on another email list, a person with a Halberg-Rassey with the same WM, said his problem was the same, and it was this manual drain at the back. He took and put a rubber hose with the end where he could get to it, along with a valve at the end, and would drain the unit after use, bail it out, and no more over amount of water in the bilge, along with mysterious water after the boat sat for a day or so.
An FYI for those with this type of water muffler besides those of us with Arcadia's.
