Have acquired 2006 Jeanneau Sun 2500. The tiller feels very stiff/tight, is this normal? If not what is the cure please as I have booked it into the boat yard in a couple of weeks. Cheers.

The rudder mechanism is non-adjustable. Track is but not the bearings. There is a pinch bolt and a bolt through the top of the rudder shaft. These two bolts hold the rudder in place. Loosen the pinch bolt and remove the other bolt. The rudder drops out. Ideally a two man job on the hard. There are nylon bearing/washers at the top and bottom. These expand over time. You now have pressure and there is no adjustment. The second problem is the tracking system – 4 ball joints all plastic. They seize up. The third problem is the actual tiller shaft can become stiff. I have solved the second problem by replacing the four ball joints with steel serviceable joints – i.e. there is a grease nipple and I can grease them every year no problem. The second problem is the tiller shaft – easy to take apart – clean and lubricate with WD 40. (Recommended in the Sun 2500 manual) Can be adjusted to rotate freely with no shake. The big problem is the friction at the rudder shafts. The correct way to address this is to replace the nylon parts. Done in the yard – two man job. It can also be addressed by reducing the size of the nylon bearing – sanding or filing – trial and error – do not take too much off – slight weep of sea water and slight play in rudder shaft. I have solved the problem temporarily for the season until I fit new bearings in winter 16/17. I would not recommend this as you are fitting a smaller bolt. Remove the bolt that goes through the top of the rudder shaft. There is a threaded hole at the top of the rudder. I made a tool that allowed me to let the rudder down a little and reduce the pressure. Fit the tool. Loosen the pinch bolt. When you are happy that the rudder is free but no play – tighten the pinch bolt. Remove the tool. Because the rudder shaft has moved down about a mm you have to fit a smaller bolt. The good news is there are three panels that give you access to all. One is in the cockpit locker for the “Right” rudder, the left rudder and centre are accessed by panels aft of the rear bunk. You might be lucky WD40 everywhere might sort the problem. There are three Sun 2500 on my Marina two have stiff rudders. All the best Philip

Hello Philip, I have just read your 2016 post about stiff rudders on the Jeanneau sun 2500, and wondered if your planned replacement of the nylon bearings has been successful. I bought my 2500 3 years ago and it had steel ball joints which have been fine. Unfortunately last season I made the mistake of leaving it on a mooring where it must have been grounding on the spring tides. My rudders now have quite a lot of play and I need to replace the bearings. Your post has already been helpful, but if anyone has any further advice or knows where to obtain replacement parts this would be greatly appreciated.
