Arrived Getxo - Bilbao Spain yesterday after 198nm crossing from Ile d'Aix in 31 hours - great sailing - dolphins at night being lit up by phosphorescence - amazing. First time Serica has been off continental shelf 2250m - glad we bought the shallow draft version. If anyone is on this coast in next few weeks do give me a shout

And here I am sitting in the office dreaming about sailing....not jealous at all John - make the breakout... If you still have to work think about moving your boat to the French Atlantic coast for a few seasons - cheaper and nicer than Levington (which I do like by the way) and plenty of flights and good rail connections

How's it going Malcolm - you still having fun?!
Yes I would definitely consider France for the future...just trying to get more experience locally first before venturing further afield..although we did make Bradwell, Brightlingsea and Burnham on Crouch so far this year, lol !

All good here - busy but great weather - currently back in France, in Ile de Yeu about 25 deg light NW forecast for next week, low swell

Hi John
I notice you said you have a shoal draft version Jeanneau I am buying a 449 and prefer a shoal draft but I am told you have to reef very early and boats are tender Any reassurances before I have to commit Also planning the same sail you did to Spain ex La Rochelle next June

Christophe
The shoal draft boats have more ballast and on the 39i at least have a longer keel length, so arguably better attached in case of grounding as the loads are spread further along the hull. I do not think they are specifically more tender, but the shorter rudder on the 39i will loose bite at lower angles of heel. Reefing not too late is helpful, but with a German mainsheet it is simple to reduce heeling loads quickly if needed in a gust. I have not sailed the 449 but have sailed the 409 and Briand designs a wonderful boat, that sails very well and with hard chines aft has far less issue with rounding up to wind even if over canvassed in a gust.
The 449 has an additional 300kg of ballast, so righting moment and stability curves will be designed to be similar. 2.2m draft of the standard boat will be a constraint in quite a few marinas.
There is a lot of other comments on this forum and elsewhere regarding shallow v deep. In my view if you race you should go deep, if you cruise and like going up rivers or into shallow harbours the shallow draft will win out
