My 2014 SO439 has developed some hairline cracks in the gelcoat around the base of the shrouds. My gut feel is that these are not significant but local boat repairer says they should be ground out and filled asap due ot risk of water ingress - this involves slackening the shrouds right of, digging out the sealant so the stainless plate can be lifted up, grinding/filling cracks (maybe twice), and then replacing and tuning the rig. same for each side and will not be cheap. The dealer says it is just cosmetic stress related cracks, perfectly normal and will contact Jeanneau but doubt they will consider a warranty issue. Obviously both of these views have a vested interest, does anyone have any experience or a sought a dis-interested opinion as to which of these views is correct? Pleased to hear. Picture attached. .

Hi Jim,
I'm not qualified to say but if water ingress for hairline cracks was a problem, nearly every boat at the marina would need grinding and filling. My boat certainly has gelcoat stress fractures around the ends of the traveller and I am not concerned ( maybe I should be). I don't think that location has any structural job to do regarding the shrouds.
I think I would just use the boat, monitor the cracks and if they don't get much worse don't worry too much about it.
Keen to hear what others think though.
Regards,
Trevor

I already brought it up in a previous thread. I am also told it is cosmetic in nature, and most likely comes from excess gelcoat in some areas. As it stands the dealer confirmed that it will be repaired under warranty. I have been told that it will be done soon, I will update this thread when it is all complete.

Thanks, the boat is in the UK. hmmm if it was in Greece I would say the yard is tricking you to do a non necessary job - as this is usual in Greece , but in UK .. may be worth talking with a surveyor..

In my humble opinion, this is a huge problem.
Should any of us be wanting to trade or sell a boat with this problem, we could expect to be penalized.
Jeanneau has a problem and should be accountable.
(as a disclaimer, I own a 6 month old 409 with similar gelcoat problems and I'm pissed!)

Magicezycs - that link to Bayliner will not show photos unless people are registered on that forum. Whilst we discourage commercial adverting on this forum, your product is very relevant to this thread, so I am sure we would be interested in seeing real before and after images and any techniques, such as pre-cleaning requirement. Hi there, Please see before and after images taken from the Bayliner Owners Forum. Image Source: www.baylinerownersclub.org/index.php/forum/general-boating-topics/55481-crazing-repair-before-and-afterHere are some tips in using MagicEzy Hairline Fix to get the best possible result: 1. Use a sewing needle or similar to scrape away any grime, wax or dirt out of the crack. 2. MagicEzy Hairline Fix is quite fluid, so shake the tube vigorously prior to opening for about 2 minutes to mix the color through for even consistency. 3. Do not use on very warm surfaces, as the product will become tacky before it has a chance to penetrate into the crack. If necessary use a damp cloth to cool the surface or apply early in the morning when temperature is cooler. 4. Some cracks are quite deep, so several applications may be necessary to completely fill the crack. Wait about 1 hour in between each application. Full application instructions and step by step video here: www.magicezy.com/products/hairline-fix/

Hi Jim,
We have a new 409 (April 2015) and are based in the UK. The commissioning manager warned us (before we got ownership) we would get some cosmetic hairline cracks in certain places on the boat due to the stiffness of the gelcoat used. As the rig tensions and the boat settles to a sailing aspect rather than sitting in a factory mould, there is some slight movement.
He said not to worry and when the boat was 10-12 months old, his grp chap would come along and do them under warranty.
When he was on the boat last time doing some other bits and pieces, he noted the ones we had so far and took pictures. Another, identical 409 in the marina (from the same broker) had hers sorted in spring 2015 (Just over year old) under warranty.
The chap uses a dremel to slightly open the crack to a v-shape (2-3mm across), fills with colour matched gelcoat and sands/polishes down. You cant see where he has been on the other boat, it matches so well.
Your picture looks just like the ones we have.

Hi. Not sure what the outcome of this was, but my 33i had cracks in the deck. Rejected by warranty 3x, and dealer wouldn't do anything. Got a surveyor and have found massive problems. Majority part of side decks are failing on both sides. Now they are offering to fix (taking up 80% of side decks and relaminating as required ) then covering with a teak deck. Boat is 3 years old. Found the dealer and Jeanneau lacking in ownership. Thinking of rejecting boat if practical. Do wonder if there are problems with this prisma process
