Can anyone tell me how to remove the wooden panels over the big cats eye windows on a 42 DS?

They are screwed in with PH screws. I've used a small short screwdriver, but it is tight and will take some time. I also have a ratchet type very small screwdriver. Be careful not to strip the heads...go slow.

Thanks Bret - I guess the headline panels have to come off the roof first. They're not stuck on with glue or anything are they? I mean it's just a case of taking out the screws, right? Don't want to start the job and get some nasty surprises!
By the way - love the improvements you've made on Tafika II.
Regards Ab

The headliner on our boat has plastic covered screw caps. Remove them and then remove the PH screws. The headliner get a little awkward to handle in the main salon, so I suggest have another set of hands to help. The wires from the lighting fixtures will hold up the panel from being taken down completely, so you may have to loosen or remove the fixtures from the headliner, depending on how intensive your project is. Some of the plastic cap were cracked and would not stay on so I replaced all of them with plastic caps with attached bought at my local hardware store.

Hi Bret and Ab, Strictly speaking the screws are Posidrive and if you use the right screwdriver it's more secure. I tried using an electric screwdriver once; never again. It has a high risk of seizing and snapping the screws, presumably because they heat up with the friction and bind in the resin. Care with a pair of Vise-grips got the stub out. I found half a dozen little plastic covers lurking in various places in the boat, presumably lost during manufacture.
I have found that whatever you do with the saloon linings, you seem to need to remove far more than you expect. For example, to remove the inner portside main panel you have to remove the other three first, as I found out installing solar panels. Cheers

Hi Ian
Thanks for the advice. I haven't tackled the panels in the saloon yet but, in the course of an unrelated project, I took the small one off above the aft bed to get to the wires going up to the cockpit table. The screws were indeed quite stiff and I can see that if you're not careful you could damage them. It's going to be a challenge taking off the big panels in the saloon, I can see!
