I'm considering fitting a wheel-pilot type autopilot (Raymarine EV100) to my SF37. The boat is at the upper end of the recommended weight range for the system. Is is likely to work well, or would I be better spending another grand on a linear or hydraulic drive system??

Depends upon the how and where you want to use the AP. If on a world cruise, min would not be my first choice, I would go for one rated probably 150-200% of the boat wt. If you are mostly using in winds say 25-30 or less, and motoring, then one at the rated wt should work.
I've just installed altho not used an ST2000 for my boat, which is in the 150-200% of boat wt, even then, I have been told in over 20 knot winds it will work, but do not press it from a racing sails up stand point etc. We are talking a bit smaller unit.....

Hi Richy, I had a wheel drive autopilot on my SO29.2 and being a light boat it was fine. I fitted a linear drive below decks to the SO36i as I had doubts about the wheel drive unit. The main difference I noticed was that the unit on the 36i is heaps quieter than the wheel drive unit. As Marty says depends on how you want to use the boat.
