I recently purchased a SO 43 DS. The brake for the wheel is frozen in the 'open' position. I needed to hold her steady and tried the brake. No luck. Since I was sailing I really didn't want to start pounding on it.
Now that I am in port I want to look at it but don't relish the idea of breaking the brake. Does anyone have experience with unsticking this? Do I need to remove the wheel first? Use WD40?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume the brake is inside the pedestal. You'll probably have better access by removing the compass and spraying WD40 or some other deep penetrating oil to loosen it up. The deep penetrating oil worked for me if you use lots of it and let it sit for about 30 minutes gently tapping the area with a hammer to setup some freeing vibrations. It is 3-IN-ONEĀ® High-Performance Penetrant.

Thanks. I will try that this Friday.

On my 43 the brake is a friction nut outside the pedestal. Presses up against the hub of the wheel. I wouldn't have to remove to compass to get to it.
