Hello,
I am a new owner of an 86 sun legende; I would like to verify the condition of the steel post supporting the mast in the cabin.
I could disassemble the table and access the lower part of the tube, but I would like to check the upper part too, the one in contact with the cabin roof.
Is there any way to open the upper part of the wooden box covering the post without breaking it ? how is the wooden box built ? I could not find any screws so the four sides are maybe glued together ?
thanks a lot and thanks to webcrew for creating this forum

Hi Rob
We have a 1988 Sun Legende, great boats. I'm not sure but you might be able to view the top via the box which holds the fluorescent light fitting? Might need a torch and mirror though.
Is there a problem or are you just checking?

Hello Robin,
no, no particular problem for the moment: a couple of owners I met had the steel post replaced as it was a bit corroded, so I was just wondering..
the previous owner cleaned and coated and resealed the base of the post and it looks perfect, I will try and get to the top of it through the wooden light fitting as you said
btw, I just bought the boat and obviously have loads of questions, if you don t mind looking here from time to time... -.<)
thanks for your help Robin

Rob
Ours had some surface rust on the base when surveyed and we did the anti-rust treatment the surveyor suggested (only rustkiller then antirust primer) and it is fine. The rest SHOULD surely be OK as there is no path for water to get to the other bits and the post is very substantial steel.
I've sent you a Personal Message (If I did it right) with my e-mail address if you have loads of questions.

We have had our Sun Legende -87 for nearly five years and the only seriour problems we have had was when the mast support broke down three years ago. Rust had destroyed the iron 10 cm over the bottom, and the mast supprt was compressed 2 cm. In 16-17 m/sek that feels very uncomfortable! We have changed the damaged area and are using rustprotection today. The reason for the rust in this area? Warm air in the boat are meeting metal in the mast support being cooled down from the keel/bottom and condensates just in the floor-area. We had no rustattach at other places on the mast support.

Tore, the post nearly collapsing must have been frightening.. The lower part of mine is ok now, I could get access from the table and the former owner glassed a protection cover to it, it looks perfect.. thank you r We have had our Sun Legende -87 for nearly five years and the only seriour problems we have had was when the mast support broke down three years ago. Helo, I just changed the complete support on my 1987 Sun Legende last winter. You can access the upper part of the support by unscrewing the bottom of the box fitted around the mast support; Remove the fluorescent light, the bottom plywood is of two pieces, other part to the rear of the mast support with hole for the light and other part to the front of theupport. The sides of the box You cant remove, since they are fitted with fiberglass. But removing the botteom will give You full access to the support. The support is fitted to the deck with fiberglass. When I changed mine completely, I removed the sides of the earlyer mentioned box as well to be able to cut lose the support laminated to the deck.

The sun legende re fit ?. Would you think it wise to replace an aging mast?.

The sun legende re fit ?. Would you think it wise to replace an aging mast?. Thinking of buying and would like to re fit every thing ). Does this sound like a reasonable thing to do ?. Given the fit will cost more than the boat. Brad
