Hi all,
We have a J53 with a furling mainsail we are struggling to get working properly.
When hauling out the sail comes out fine but the car does not start to move and when the sail reaches the position of the car on the boom the angle of attack on the outhaul rope increases to a vertical angle until it is trying to pull it vertically down the leech of the sail rather than out - the only way to get it out from here is either a helping hand to move it along (defeating the object of a furling main) or extreme force on the outhaul line.
The sail itself appears to be in straight and can be walked out by hand by grabbing the clew and walking it along the boom with almost no resistance.
Any other J53 owners that can offer advice or have experienced this?
Cheers

How old is the sail? Old and baggy sails tend to be the reason for roller main problems. I'm under the impression that roller mains need to be replaced earlier if you want to avoid problems.

Also check the cloves pin inside the in-mast furling system at the bottom. Our's fell out ofter the locking pin broke.

Have you tried adjusting the angle of the boom?
I don't have a roller furling main, so please ignore me if this isn't an issue.

Has the sail always been difficult to unfurl? How old is it? Have you stripped and cleaned out the furling mechanism? We replaced our sail this year. The old one was 7 years old (2007 45DS). It is now very easy to furl and unfurl the main. We are also replacing the 3 sheaves that are on/in the boom. It seems the new outer sheave has a bearing assembly that seems not to be part of what we have now. I'll update once I get the old one out. The other two sheaves are very loose on the shaft. Have you seen this document: www.zsparsuk.com/#!furling-mast-help/c1drb Ian

Hi all,
Thanks for your feedback - the boat is approx 1 yr old, sails hardly been used.
It is very easy to unfurl it by grabbing the clew end and physically walking it down the boom.
When she is being furled out the clew approaches the outhaul track but the outhaul car does not start to move. When the clew reaches the outhaul car rather than start to slide the car along the track it just starts to vertically pull down on the leech of the sail instead.
I'll have a look at that document Ian and see if that yields any solutions

Just a thought but can you get someone to make a video As you deeply the sail and then have a discussion with Z-Spars? They are always very helpful.
Also if the boat is so new what does the dealer say?
