Hello all, Exciting news, Jeanneau has just announced the J54 Yacht - same Briand and Winch partnership as before so some style details similar to the J64. Some innovative ideas as well, I have seen this yacht in the flesh and she is a proper machine. I go with Hoppy. The market needs a Sun Fast 40 (like an Open 40). Like a Pogo 40, but not for silly money and with some form of comfort.

Since Beneteau group has the First 40 I'm wondering if a SF4400 would be the way to go. A production potential handicap winner for some of the ocean big races.

Yes I too would love a bigger Sun Fast but I think if you look at the Sun Fast range against the First they are quite different beasts, the Sun Fast being a geniune through and through racer wheras the First range is and always has been more of a lightweight Oceanis, not to mention the racing yachts whilst popular amoungst us on the forum are not where the core of the market is....Jeanneau/Beneteau has made its mark as the biggest builder in the world by catering very sucsessfully to this demand and procudced some superb yachts doing it so I can't see them abondoning this.
I am with Malcos thoughts on this, the Jeanneau 57 is the next obvious boat to update, or possiblily the J50DS......
A Jeanneau 59 would be a real superb addition, no?

i'd take an SF version of the 349 personally! Much better floor plan for cruising than the current SF rigs. Just up the SA, make the draft a big deeper, ie 7-7.5' or the bulb a bit heavier with a lead option, add 2-3' of mast height......probably have a boat up my ally. That would make a better option than the 1st35 IMHO. Or the 409 on some steroids to compete a bit more with the 1st40 market.
Altho I did see an approx mid 90;s SF50 for sale a bit ago while looking.
I will admit, a week ago at the NW US roundezvouz, I think I was the only boat there with out at minimum a dodger, most also had a bimini combo. Even the demo 469 had a full dodger/bimini ready to go when one bought the boat.

Which SF comes next depends on how Jeanneau/Beaeteau Group wants to position Sun Fast in the market place. At the moment First seems to be positioned as a competitive racer that can keep the admiral happy on the summer cruise, whilst Sun Fast is for solo/dual handed racers with only basic comforts. If they want SF to continue in that vain then an Open 40 is the next boat. If they want SF to be the racing elite of the B group, then the next boat should focus on fully crewed yacht that can potentially win or at least be the first non-custom carbon racer in the fleet of races like the Sydney to Hobart, Fastnet etc... 20 years ago 40 foot might have been the way to go, but like with cruising the fleets are getting bigger.
As a French company, perhaps the open 40 will appeal but if they want to sell more in the U.S. then bigger might be a better choice.
They could always bring out an open 40 later after the market realises SF is more than just for short handed racing
That's my €0.02 worth :-)
