hallo I've a jeanneau sun odyssey 42i 2008 with a yanmar 4JH4AE 54 Hp. Gear Ratio 1:2,36 Kanzaki mod km 35p 30 mm shaft. my actual fix 3 blade propeller is 19x 14.
I've found a flexofold used same boat wit same engine ( performance model) 19x11 You think it can be good? Many thanks. Antonio.

it depends - if you boat is currently well propped then when you go down from 14 to 11 pitch in the perfect world you will loose about 1kt in speed, but if your boat is currently over propped then you will actually gain speed ....
my personal calculation for you boat \ prop will be about 12 or 13 pitch for 3 blade fixed prop or 3 blade folding
according to the calculation with pitch 11 your boat should do about 4.5kt at 2000rpm and 7.3kt at 3200rpm - if this is OK for you then the flexofold prop is OK for you

BTW: the way the boat behave with fixed prop is quite different from boat with folding prop :
fixed: it is good reliable prop in forward and reverse and especially in choppy sea !, but you do not actually have a sail boat - you have some kind of hybrid that almost can sail but not really...
folding : great in sailing , the boat move great in the water and if you love sailing you dreams come true, but in a choppy sea when all girls on boat want to get in the harbour asap you want to have fixed prop...

I find a 20x13 flexofold today. you thinks would be better?

yes sounds better - some questions: 1. are you talking about 2 blade or 3 blade ? 2. do you have space to fit 20 inch diameter ? ( you need to have space between the end of the propeller and the hull at least 15%-20% of the propeller diameter - as less space you have more vibrations you will feel you can get the default propeller size for Jeanneau with Yanmar from this table Jeanneau-Yanmarand make sure that you have watched this video about flexofold

Many thanks to you Vasko. the 20x13 is a 3 blade propeller.
I've actually the 19 x 14 so I think that the 20 x 13 can fit

Dear VasKo, In the chart table attached my yanmar engine 4jh4ae is not mentioned. But all the yanmar engines I saw on the list with 54 cv have the 20x13 propeller

Vasko, no need to do any unnecessary scare mongering. The case in question is pretty unique otherwise every 2 blade flex-o-fold boat will be having that problem. My flexofold works perfectly fine in both directions. I'm pretty sure it stops fine when going forward but I don't do that much in the Med, but stopping when in reverse is excellent. I don't recall ever having problems going into the chop. Sure I lose some speed, but that happens regardless whether it a fixed, folding or feathered prop. I just found this comment on the flexofold site... A 2-blade propeller is more efficient than a 3-blade. Surprised? Well, most people are. Thus, a properly sized 2-blade will give you a higher speed at a given RPM in flat water than a properly sized 3-blade. The 2-blade is also lower in drag and cheaper.
The 3-blade, because of its larger blade area, will accelerate the boat faster. This means a 3-blade is better around the docks, when powering against a head sea and when stoppingVasko, looks like you should have got a 3 blade to keep Mrs Vasko happy when the chop is up Antonio, Contact Flex-o-fold telling them what you have told us and ask them for their recommendation. www.flexofold.com/propeller-inquiry/

Hoppy, I agree with you that 3 blade is better choice then 2 blade. If we are talking about my personal choice I got a 2 blade 17x13 Eliche-Radice for my 34 ft crab pod with 28hp 2.42 gear ratio main reason of course is price £470 including delivery to UK and as a second reason this is actually Volvo prop I generally think that Volvo has done their home work and if they sell this prop for their engines then it is good enough for me too...

@tafika thank's.. Yesterday Flexofold Denmark wrote me that with the 20x13 size propeller 3 blades, my 2008 jeanneau s.o. 42i will better manouvre in doks and in retro, so they reccomend me to fit this size. My engine is the yanmar 4jh4ae 54 cv with the 2.36 gear reduction ratio. cheers.

Antonio, have you spoke to Darglow yet. They are the UK supplier of Flex-o-Fold props. I have found them very good to work with and can offer discounts on all there products. They may even have a second hand prop that will suit your boat. I bought a Featherstream from them this winter and am please with the service and technical know how. I purchased a KiwiProp for my SO45 when she first arrived in New Zealand. She had the original three bladed prop beforehand and had major propwalk issues. We did the changeover on a floating dock in less than an hour....getting to old one off was tough! The difference was amazing, as the manufacturer said; more bot speed under sail, better boat speed when motoring, better fuel economy, and no propwalk issues , and if going forward at 5knts, and throw into reverse, it stops in its own length. A great buy! Probably the least expensive of the folding/flairing props.

What you think about the flexofold 18x14 3 blades for my jeanneau 42i 2008 yanmar 54 cv shaft line ?

What you think about the flexofold 18x14 3 blades for my jeanneau 42i 2008 yanmar 54 cv shaft line ? looks small to me - I have 17x13 on 34 feet boat and yours is x2 bigger - is it not 20x13 your standard prop ?

My original and actual propeller is a 19/14 fixed blades. Flexofold wrote me 18x14 or 20/13 for better going around the docks, but doesn't reach up to 2700 rpm. With the 18x14 no problem to reach all the rpm of the engine.

Antoni,
Are you in the Uk? If so you'll be dealing with Darglow I think. They can advise on the prop size given the engine and gear box specifications. Ian

I live in Italy. Darglow wrote me 2 times, the first time wrote ok for 18x14, the second time 20x13.
I'm looking for who have a sun Odyssey 42i with FoF equipped as original version (performance) so that can write me the correct dimensions. Thank's Antonio.

Antiono, Another option is to go for a feathering propeller. These have the advantage of being able to adjust the pitch which means that you can tweak it until it is right for your boat. I fitted an Autostream feathering prop to my boat, the sailing improvement was huge but I still need to do a few tweaks to optimise the pitch. The feathering props do have slightly more drag than folding props though.

I don´t completely understand all this toniocask. Why don´t you ask someone who actually KNOWS what they are talking about, instead of people sort of suggesting things here on a forum. A prop is too important to get it wrong.
Ian gave you a very good tip: ask Darglow Engineering in the UK. They have supplied hundreds of props to Jeanneau´s of all shapes and sizes. Just send them an email. They are Flexofold dealers and are truly knowledgeable when it comes to props in general.

@on y va As you can read above, I asked to Darglow, the first time they say to me go to the 18x14, the second time 20x13, so now I'm little be confused, and only for this reason that I ask for people that have this propeller..thanks Antonio
