When sailing at night we have a tri colour at the top of the mask and also a all round anchor white light. When we switch to motoring lights the tri colour goes off and a port/starboard light goes on half way down the mast but no rear white light. Is this correct ? Paul

paul,
I'm no expert on this but that's how I read the RYA table - yes.
Anyone else with thoughts on this?
Ian

Colregs state 'A power-driven vessel of less than 12 metres (39.4 ft) may display only an all-round white light and sidelights. However, in the case of a skiff a wooden clinker rowing boat which falls into this category only needs to be capable of showing a white light.'
So yes it is acceptable.

Hi
When the switch on the control panel on the 33i is switched to sailing only the tricolour should light.
When the switch on the control panel is switched to motoring the all round white anchor light should go on and the bi coloir on the front of the mast approximately at half mast height should also go on.
The anchor light on the switch panel should not be switched on unless at anchor.

Hi Tom
Thanks for the confirmation re switches from sailing to motoring and this started my worry about the top mast light. The anchor light switches on and off, the Tri colour switches on and off, but the motoring option only switches the mast head port/starboard light NO top light. We have check the bulbs and both are working so will now need to check the motoring switch. I hope you are still winning your races.

I suggest you recheck your connections base of mast under headlining
The wiring seems a mystery and the 33i manual does not provide much help.
There are two cables in the mast:
3 core - from top of the mast for the sailing tricolour and anchor 2 core - from motoring port/starboard bicolour
Above the headlining there is a terminal strip - negative side plus a second set of connectors with some encapsulated components
Connections: 3core brown to violet (anchor light +) 3 core blue to red (tricolour +) 3 core green/yellow to -ve block (common - for both masthead lights)
2 core brown to orange (bicolour +) 2 core blue to -ve block
If you are still having problems let me know and I will poke around a bit more - the above notes I made a couple years ago. I suspect that the encapsulated components contain some form of relay, which operates on the anchor light when motoring is selected.
Another thought - have you fitted LED bulbs? We asked dealer to fit these, but dealer could only get arrangement to work with LED in tricolour and filament bulb in the anchor light. (I subsequently fitted LED bulb which wasn't polarity specific into anchor light and everything works fine)

Hi Peter
Many thanks for the information, I will put this with the boat paperwork for future reference. One one my crew went up the mast to check the bulbs which seemed ok but we changed them any way and would you believe it the top white light now comes on when motor sailing lights are selected. Must have had a loose connection. All working fine now thanks. I have also learnt that an all round white light over port and starboard is ok for a sailing vessel under motor if under 12 meters.

Hi Paul. I have also got a 33i (but not the performance version). My lights are the same and I agree that this is correct for this length of boat. (I did have to check though!):-) ceri
