We will be taking delivery of a 2016 SO 509 this September/October that we selected over the Beneteau 48. Current boat is a S2 9.1 (30') with a 138 PHRF rating that we have accumulated around 20K mostly racing miles since we purchased it new in 1986. We certainly realize the 509 is not designed as a racing yacht but our hope is to do some more long distance comfortable racing while adding long distance cruising now that we will have more free time. The dilemma is over the years we have been quite competitive with the current boat so when we do race the new boat we want speed. As an indicator the current boat has four jibs and three spinnakers with with plenty of carbon fiber.
We have plenty of longer local races in the 20 mile to 130 miles available. Then there is always TransPac, Vic-Maui and Van Isle 360.
The short list of go faster options ordered:
Classic main! Those awful negative roach furling mains look just terrible. Full battens.
140% Jib. We have light winds often in Puget Sound. Can be furled up and run on the inside track as required. Could add a 110% later.
Outboard jib tracks with adjustable cars.
Both sails have the factory performance upgrade.
Deep draft keel.
Folding prop, Dynema running rigging, Dyform standing rigging.
Below deck furler to get the jib down on the deck where it belongs.
Hydraulic backstay adjuster.
Spinnaker/Asymmetric spinnaker rigging. (Lets face it, once you are use to them, sailing without a spinnaker is like having sex without having, well you know...)
We are having them install only the basic electronics with radar and autopilot and we will add chart plotters later. Raymarine is coming out with bunch of new very interesting items over the next few months. We will purchase an asymmetric spinnaker a couple months after taking delivery. A symmetric spinnaker would come after that.
So what experience does anyone have racing any of the larger new design Sun Odyssey boats? Any rating information? Any comments or suggestions on equipment?
Dean
