Anyone here wintered in Crete? I met up with a Greek friend today and she suggested that I should look at wintering in Crete. She highlighted that the climate is best in Greece for winter and the cities are big enough to be busy all year round unlike some islands where the towns become ghost towns. I did a quick google and found this marina My friend likes the town of Agios Nikolaos where the marina is, so it all sounds good. The rate over the low season is only €185 per month (not incl tax, electricity or water) which is a great rate. I've decided to send in a reservation request to see if it is possible as I found a post in a forum that says it's full every winter.

ubuysa should be along shortly to tell you all about it. He has written an excellent Pilot to Crete also.
You'll be in the queue behind me, as the place is full for our boat size according to the email I received from them last week (and if you're not, I'll be mighty upset). I'm contemplating staying in Turkey for the winter again, although Leros Marina (Evros) have space and a similar price to the rest (Marmaris Yacht Marina is currently second best to Ag Nic, with EUR 1530 for a SO40 after CA discount).
There is also Licata as an option, but it's just that bit to far away from where I want to sail.
Being NZ flagged, the 6 month/12 month issue for foreign yachts may have been an issue for us wintering at Ag Nic anyway, so we are becoming a little resigned to remaining in Turkey.
Cheers, PT

That sucks to read. I hope that the photo of my crew in their skimpy bikinis that I attached with me request will bump me up the list I think Licata is where sailbleu spent last winter and I think is booked again for this winter.

No Hoppy , definitly not Licata , I've been hearing nasty stories about that marina with regards to the fouling of the hull whilst spending the winter. i'm still staying in Marina Di Ragusa - not that far from Licata , but more to the east - added The month of may for 300 € , being a customer , and will normally be leaving at the end of this month. This is such a fantastic marina that we decided to come back next winter , like most residents here . Some are here for the fifth year already. Wintering starts from oktober up to the end of april , seven months . The rate for my boat ( if you paid the advance before januari 1 ) , being a 40 foot , is 1260 € . Without making reservations you should add , for my boat lenght , max 150 € . Still many berths available , it is after all a fairly big marina . Over 50 % are english speaking , as is the office very friendly staff. As I said , a great marina that has the best take away pizzeria of Sicily on walking distance. My favorite is the pizza frutti di mare , 7 € , and it looks like there's a whole fishmarket dumped on the pizza. Good and cheap shopping , weekly market and many activities in the little town. Now I sound like their ambassador no Honestly , terrific here . Be it that the first 2 months of the year were cold ( average of 10° Celsius ) , I was here for two weeks in january , it never gets any colder because of the seawater temp. But also very windy , wet and rainy . I guess there's always pro's and con's . Regards

I never received a reply from them.
My plans have changed, I will go to Australia in December to move back into my house that has been rented out for 15+ years. I need to reestablish it as my residence before I can sell it (tax reasons) I'll then be back at the boat for spring. I might just take the easy way out and bring the boat back to Corfu for winter and haul out whilst I'm away.

I have kept my boat in Greece on the hard over winter in 3 places - Paros - Plaka ( Aegean sea), Egina ( Aegean sea) and Paros ( Aegean sea) - Poros-Plaka was the cheapest , Egina was best... - for 40 feet boat from Nov to May - the price were about 800EUR including the new antifoiling ... and you always have the nice wintering places in France and Spain too if you get bored this summer from Greece ... if you are going to stay on the boat the years after that and you still do not have copper coat .. get it really worth...

It's funny that it is June 3rd now and I only just moved on board and I have not left the marina this year and yet I have not worked since last year :-)

Crete appealed for the milder climate but I will avoid the worst of the winter. If I'm not living on board the whole winter, then I like Corfu as I know the people here who will work on the boat. By winter I will know if I need to get Jessabbé ready for a 2016/2017 Atlantic crossing
