Hi folks, time have come to replace the old main sail, it lost it's shape and we have more and more troubles rolling it in and out. Outhaul train on top of the boom keeps freezing and won't move although rollers are clean and free................... I would like to hear ideas about new cloth materials for the sail rather than the old original Dacron.................. What about the vertical battens..................... Any tips before inviting the local sail maker.................... Any price hints............................ Please open fire. Alex

You should perhaps contact your mast manufacturer (Z-spars??) to get their opinion about vertical batons just in case the have issues to flag with them.

Alex, we've just paid for a new main from Sanders for Affinity a 45DS 2008. Our old main is the original from Quantum. Affinty basically sails by the head so the main tends to be for balance. We looked at short vertical battens and tri-radial but decided that for the type of sailing we do, long distance cruising, the chance of probs with short battens and repairing a tri-radial wasn't worth the risk. There's usually only myself and my wife on board. We've gone for cross cut Vektran from DP as this has good UV protection. I know that others on this site have gone for the short batten option and are pleased with their sails.
You might wish to consider were you will be sailing and how easy it will be to maintain the sail over its lifetime.
We are now looking at a new Genoa but need to confirm that the Facnor furler is ok. We had some probs with it last season.
Hope this helps, Ian

We blew out our old mainsail sail across the boot of Italy. Spent a bit of time looking at all our options and decided to go with Dacron from Kemp Sails in the UK. We do use our boat a lot as full time cruisers and put a lot of miles on her and wanted a heavy duty sail that can take abuse from some fairly poor sailors and yet take us back across the Atlantic when the time comes to do so. We had it shipped to EuroMarine in Dubrovnik and they helped us get the old one out. Oh the new Kemp Sail sails great.
