I am about to splice 25m of rope to my anchor chain. Youtube is very helpful there.
However, there is the back-splice where the line only goes through the last chain shackle and then spliced back onto itself, or there is the long chain-splice, where the line is spliced into the chain.......
Who has what and why?

Afternoon.
We had a chain rode system on Affinity and it was a long chain splice so the windlass, Quick, could deploy and haul both without having to worry about what was around the capstan. We went to all chain for the retirement trip. Haha Im working again!!! Ian

I had multiplat long spliced into chain which worked well around gypsy but became stiff after a while and not easy to check for wear, I am changing to 3 strand and going for the eye splice but tapering the splice to help it feed it onto the gypsy. As its a simple splice I can check for wear and end for end the chain and rope every 2 years. As they say different ships different long splices. If it were not for the weight issue I would go all chain as whatever splice one has it is at the back of my mind as to whats happening down there. Im not sure though if one type of splice allows a larger diameter of rope to be used against the other as this may be a deciding factor.

I have 3/4" 3 strand back-spliced onto my 10mm chain. I did the splice myself and it transitions well from the gypsy to the drum. Not a difficult splice to do. Dennis CHUMU SO37 Dalhousie ON Canada
