Our SO32 has a mystery pushbutton switch in line with the starter & house master switches - can anyone tell me what it's for? It's a single pole push-to-make/release-to-break. Attachment DeletedMike

I have a similar switch on my SO35 that provides power to the windlass. In my case, it's a toggle, though.

Thanks Don, it's definitely not that in our case.

If you figure it out, perhaps by tracing the wires, please let us know.

Bow truster? Electric winch?

Boat has never been fitted with bowthruster or electric winch, and it's a very small switch with small diameter wires. It's a pushbutton switch which only makes while you have your finger on the button so I assume it must be some sort of reset. The wires disappear into the loom but where they go then is anyone's guess.

It might be your inverter. "Push to activate"

Good afternoon,
on our SO33i we also have a toggle switch to activate the sensor of the fuel meter. When not pushed the fuel meter is not activated. Maybe........ Have a look.
Greetings,
Dany

Thanks for all the suggestions, I appreciate the ideas.
I'm 99% sure there is no inverter (unless it's well hidden and wasn't mentioned in the inventory).
It's not a toggle switch, it is only 'made' while you hold it down. It's down in the aft cabin alongside the master switches, so it can't be used to control anything that you might want from the cockpit (or at least if it does then it's in a daft place). The fuel gauge appears to work without having pressed this switch.

It really does sound like an RCD or thermal cut out type switch. They seem to fit them where there is a direct connection to a seperate battery for some heavy duty device like windlass or winches.
I did look at a boat some years ago that had all the switches left in place associated with a Genset but the owner had taken it with him onto his new boat and they were no longer in use.
Is there no way you can contact the previous owner?

Come to think of it my previous boat had something similar to kill the engine from below decks. Try pressing it with the engine running and see if it stops!

I'll try that! Presumably it would require an electrically controlled decompression mechanism.

I guess so. In 8 years we never used this feature once on our last boat but obvioulsy someone thought it would be useful.

Do you have a key to start your engine? Or a push button?
Some people (like me) have an extra starter button installed, as the keyswitch on your engine panel in the cockpit is a "weak link" in the whole starting system.

It is ideally positioned to call for breakfast from the aft bunk.

My 2004 SO35 has the same push/pull switch. I need to pull it out to shut down the instruments completely, and push in to activate the "Instrument" toggle on the circuit board. Your mileage may vary!

Well it's not engine kill or start. I've only tried pushing it (it springs back when released) not pulling it out - will try that next time I'm on board. Some of the instruments are always on when the house master switch is on, so it would be useful if this was a way of shutting them down.

Congratulations to renegade27. It is actually a toggle switch, I just wasn't pushing it hard enough to toggle it! It switches instruments on/off so now I can have house batteries on when moored without wasting juice on instruments. Thanks to all for your suggestions!

I think you will find that the switch shuts down the the st 60 instruments read out at the helm It does on mine Possibly to save battery power check your readouts and then push it They wil go blank Sometimes when you switch off the batteries the instruments are still reading so this eliminates the power drain

Thanks corksailor, that is exactly what it does (see my last post).
