we have just broken the handle on the rear valve again -- looks like it might have frozen up again -- we bought the boat new in 2003 - a jeanneau ds40 and this is the 3rd time we have had to replace it -- the forward head has not had a problem since 03 -- for the life of us we can not understand why this valve keeps failing -- one thought might be the ssb and a lot of wiring gets close to it and might a stray current get in it and mess with it but they are also close to others with no issues any one have any thoughts? thanks chuck patty and svsoulmates in port yasmine hammamet tunisia

Can't help you on why they should be failing but I recently read that new ultra strong plastic is the future for through the hull fittings. Probably read it in Yachting Monthly magazine.

I had the metal fitting replaced with plastic (Marelon?) over winter. It is heaps easier to use than the factory fitted metal one. So far, so good.
I saw somewhere on this forum a comment that the original metal seacock was never a good design as the ball balve is large diameter, the handle small and the position awkward. It seems destined to get stuck.

Hi Ian,
I have a 36i also and contemplating changing the thru hull fittings. Did you change the valves only? Or did you change the thru hull as well? Did you changed them all? The head one seems the most problematic as the access is limited to say the least.
Pictures would go a long way...
Cheers, Allegria

Allegria
The whole fitting was changed (through hull, valve and a bit of pipe). Thw work was done entirely by my local boat yard, so I don't have any insight. I do know they had to remove the toilet to get to the pipework.
I will take some pictures when I am next at the boat.
