FIgure out the J measure to start. I would also figure out the longest LP jib/genoa you have. Then at the end of the day, you can go for something that has the ability to be slightly short than the J measure, and slightly longer than 80% of the longest LP you have. That will be a good range to have for YOUR boat. That is how I looked at it for mine also.

Selden make telescopic whisker/spinnaker pole which cold be handy as you can pole out a big 150% genoa and reduce the pole length for a spinnaker or a reefed genoa Plenty of dealers in Aus www.seldenmast.com/

Deckhardware at Brookvale sell the Forespar extendable whisker pole. I have one and have been very satisfied with it. As for length a whisker pole needs to be longer than J for big overlapping genoas which the 42DS can carry. For no extras racing our oversize spinnaker pole at 125% of J is barely long enough for a 150% genoa which is why we purchased the extendable whisker pole.
If you are not doing no extras racing or trying to get the last bit of speed a 114% spinnaker pole is a good compromise as it it not too long to store and not as expensive as an extendable whisker pole. I would go for carbon next time as it is a pretty heavy spar to handle.
BTW very nice boat.

OOPs
I think the 42DS does not have as large a genoa as I thought because of the gunwhale mounted stays. So perhaps the 114% would be the longest you need to consider.
This might be a blessing as the extended whisker pole on a big overlapping genoa is a beast to handle in anything more than a gentle breeze

Hi I have a 379 and made my own quite simple and cheap
6 metre length of 50 mm aluminium tube 2mm wall made it the same length as the foot of the genoa, got it powdercoated, bought 2 Ronstan RF1661 spinaker pole ends, made up the topping lift wire all for under $500.
Cheers

Hi,
I have a SO36i and I did exactly the same. You can find some anodised aluminium from spar manufacturer and have it cut to the desired length, don't even need to powder coat it. Works a treat and a lot cheaper.
Cheers, Allegria

Hi Bombaysaphire,
Useful post - I'm looking at this for my 379.
A few questions if I may: What size headsail are you using, I'm guessing 132%? Has 6m turned out to be a good length? Did you fit a mast track or are you just using the standard D ring fitting on the mast?
Thanks,
Simon

Bump... Interested to hear from 379 owners about setups for a whisker pole and whether the stock mast fitting is strong enough. Thanks. Hi Bombaysaphire, Useful post - I'm looking at this for my 379.
