The frezer door in the refrigerator on our 2011 Sun Odyssey 42 DS ices over. Does anyone have a good solution?

I had the same problem. I installed a 3/16" closed cell gasket on the land area around for the lid and I also installed a "U" shaped gasket on the "freezer" rim. I purchased both at either Home Depot or Lowes...can't remember which. It stopped the icing completely. I'll be on the boat tomorrow and will take some pictures & update this posting.

Do you leave the refrigerator on all of the time or does it ice up in a couple of days. Ours ices up and you cannot open it after a month or two.
Regards,
Trevor

We are on a marina berth and so are plugged into the mains power 24/7. It just gradually ices up as cold air escapes. Our challenge is twofold: 1. We have some flexible sealing around the door and the body of the ice box, however, we are not sure whether it seals the gap.
2. The cold air leaks around the plastic clip that holds the door in place. If we leave it too long, the clip is frozen making it difficult/impossible to pull the door open.

I am in the same situation with the same problem. I actually simply thought it was like the fridges in the old days where they required defrosting every now and again because when the door is opened the moist air causes the moisture to freeze at the coldest place.
If a better seal could help perhaps I should try that.

Hi Tafika II Thank you very much for your photographs. As Trevor mentioned, a picture is worth a thousand words. We shall study them then go looking for equivalent gasket materials. Sorry for the dlay in my reply. I was unable to attend to your message until now.

Glad I could help! Now it's on to where can I put a freezer and the installation of my bowsprit and gennaker roller furling...I'll post these subjects when the project are done. The list comes & goes, but it never really ends.

Hi I'm having this problem big time with my freezer frosting up. The original rubber seal is not effective. Can you repost the pictures as they seem to have expired and I would love to copy your idea.

Likewise I can't see these photos as it looks like I need to sign up / log in to imageshack which I don't want to do just to view pics.

Looks like I don't have access to the photos anymore, but here are the specification. I purchased the gasket from MSC Industrial Supply in ther USA as their catalog #31941396, It is a sclosed cell black 1" (25.4mm) wide x .250" (6.35mm) thick PVC gasket with adhesive backing. Do not be tempted to get anything thicker as the lid will not stay flush. It comes in a roll 47' long with is more than you need.

Wow thanks a lot. I nearly did buy a thicker material.

My freezer lid (SO 52.2) has a groove moulded into it for the circular rubber gasket which is 1/4" diameter in profile. Did you just stick the new gasket rubber over this groove. What about the corners, did you just miter the flat gasket there or just butt join it.
I have a picture of mine but I'm not sure how to embed it here.

Pretty certain Tafika's freezer door will just be a flat metal plate with a hinge at the bottom. No groove on door of my boat's freezer door. Tafika has a 2008 42DS and I have a 2009 42DS.
There aren't any corner's as the freezer plate has curved edges. I simply ran the seal around the oblong door surface to follow the contour of the plate. It sounds as if your boat has a much more solid freezer door or you are describing the lid. The 42DS freezer is inside the fridge box and has a thin metal door. The top fridge hatch has a recess and a skimpy seal underneath the hinged door. I beefed that up with an extra seal glued to the flat surface of the recess. It is a flat surface and I simply cut 45deg angles for the corners. The extra seal isn't too thick as the original seal presses on top when the lid is closed.

I did nothing on the actual freezer stainless door. I tried that once before with poor results. On the lid to the refrigerator compartment there is a rounded gasket. I did not replace that one. I replaced only the outside rim, mitre-cut the bends and bonded it to the flat surface after removing all the old gasket and adhesive residue.

Thanks Trevor,
I have the same fridge and the same issue on the SO 36i. I shall try that as it does ice over quite quickly...
Thanks all for the pics and solution.
Cheers, Allegria

Superb thanks. Now makes sense. I had been trying to visualize a gasket installed around the freezer lid so this now makes sense.
