Exciting news just in is that a third model of the next generation Sun Odyssey fleet should be available for viewing at this years Autumn/Fall boatshows.
This totally new Sun Odyssey 379 follows the design cues established in the SO409 and SO439 and will also feature twin wheel steering. Its large interior will allow for a large head with separate shower stall even in the two aft cabin option. I hope to soon have some concept images and provisional specifications to share.
Unlike the 439 and 409 this will be a Marc Lombard design and as well as fixed keel a lifting keel version is being planned.
I understand this model is not a direct replacement for the very successful Sun Odyssey 36i which will continue in production.
Although it is pure speculation on my part, if the size/number sequence continues we may see the new range extended to include a future SO349, SO319 and perhaps a SO469 sometime in 2012.
Watch this space for more info.
cheers
Malcolm

Malcolm,
A fellow from Portugal I know, mentioned a 409 was getting setup to race IRC2, with what sounds like a hot rig setup. Any word on the what, other than per this fellow, The skipper will be Hervé Piveteau, winner of the Mini series in 2007.
I could handle a 349 possibly. I still need to get to local dealer and check out a 409 they have in stock.

Marty I had not heard about any trick rig, but it is quite possible as Hervé is now in Erik's team developing the sailboat range. His Mini 6.5 transatlantic blog is at: tinyurl.com/3lzp2j4Will let you know if I hear any more. You definitely should take a test sail in the 409, if as I expect the smaller models do follow in a similar guise they should be great boats cheers Malcolm

Webcrew, Thanks for these informative previews. The New SO379 has much that is attractive, Twin steering wheels, overlapping headsails, a solent and a more racy rig. From the picture I am guessing that the cockpit table could be removed for racing and that there may be room for extra winches on the cockpit coamings in front of the locker lids. I do like the Lombard stern treatment which can be seen on his designs in the RM range and the way it has been matched with the enclosed stern, helmsman seats and lockers. The hull dimensions and rig are very similar to our upgraded one off SO37p except the 379 has a longer J measurement and will achieve the genoa area required for light airs without as much overlap. I would have liked a longer boom, longer genoa tracks a 2.2 m draft and a masthead spinnaker off take . I expect the 379 will be faster than the 36iP due to the larger righting moment, more sail area and not much more weight. With a longer boom and a deeper keel it should have given the 39iP a run for their money. Regards David
