In the latest (November) issue of Yachting Monthly there is a report of how a SO37 charter yacht was sailed back from the Isles of Scilly to Cornwall, after the keel had been smashed off after a rocky grounding.
The charterer who did that did not report the grounding and was apparently unaware he had left the keel behind (it was later recovered by divers)
The boat was then chartered out twice to others and it was the third crew who reported "steering problems", the boat was then lifted out and the missing keel noted, investigation traced it back to the first charterer and his unreported damage
That the Sun Odyssey had not suffered any apparent leaks (the keel bolts had sheared off) and continued to be sailable in the open sea (the Western approaches always have a large swell even in benign conditions) is really quite impressive and has been put down to the significant form stability of the wide body , plus engine and tankage giving sufficient stability

Hi
I own a S/O 37...
First of all wen I read this I felt reassured hat if my boat lost its keel it "could" carry on afloat.
Then I started to worry.... in the article it says the keel bolts had corroded. Needless to say I have inspected my keel bolts (a visual inspection from lifting the floor boards) - but how do you know what the other part of the keel bolt is like? (the part you can't see!!).
Regards
Ian

Keel bolts are only at risk of corrosion where exposed to air/water. So provided the sikaflex used to make the keel to hull join remains intact there are unlikely to be problems.
If the join does open up (eg from hard or multiple groundings) there is likely to be tell tale water and staining coming from the joint when the boat is lifted out of the water
Provided periodic inspections are made and the boat hasn't been abused I would sleep soundly, comfortable in the knowledge Jeanneau's have a fantastic reliability record for construction

Hi Marty
Sorry no, YM only do pdf reprints (at a charge) after a few months as their revenue comes from hard copy sales
cheers
